(April 19, 2024 — Johannesburg) — ZULO recounts his extensive journey on new pop rap single “Garden” as he embarks on a mission to be one of the greatest artists of all time.
The song opens with ZULO’s inner voice proclaiming the end of his setbacks and denounces his inner challenges in favour of his dream, reflecting on his journey from rapping with his older cousin to overcoming the hurdles of a toxic music industry. ZULO also pays homage to icons including Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Nelly, Riky Rick, AKA and Black Coffee, recognizing their influence in paving the way for his own endeavours.
Produced by Sxno, ZULO and Boydukes, the triumphant single is an innovative culmination of electropop, kwaito and amapiano-infused hip-hop as the anthemic chorus features ZULO’s poignant chant of an unwavering determination and growth.
“It’s a spiritual song, you can really feel the weight of the moment,” ZULO describes, “I don’t celebrate my wins too often. Many people remind me to just stop and take it in, but I don’t, I just keep going. I’d like to think this song is my way of honouring that.”
The single also features CLJ in its closing choruses, a teenage boy band from Eldorado Park that went viral on TikTok with their covers, adding a fresh and dynamic element to the song’s final moments.
“Garden” extends ZULO’s single streak which commenced with “Adawise” last year and continued with “JOL” in January, further exemplifying ZULO’s commitment to pushing boundaries and exploring new sonic territories, setting a precedent for the future of South African hip-hop.
